In 2001, the White Construction Group and a team of engineers and masonry experts began the restoration of the historic Trinity United Methodist Church located on the edge of downtown Denver, CO.

There were 3,200 tons of rhyolite and sandstone used on the church before its first services on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1888.  As early as 1910, there were tremendous signs of deterioration of the sandstone trim.  Over the next 80 years, the church leaders embarked on a restoration effort and had many attempts, but still found deterioration worse than times before.

After taking pictures of all of the stone and demonstrating the problem areas, the church obtained a grant from the Colorado State Historical Fund.

“The composition of the new sandstone is much denser than the old sandstone.  You could put a drop of water on the old sandstone, and it would immediately absorb it.  With the new sandstone, the water just beads up on the surface and that’s exactly what we needed.” said Chris Haugen, the project manager of The White Construction Group.

271 tons of new sandstone was installed for the Trinity restoration project, supplied and fabricated by Pine’s Stone Company.  The church now stands to be a community jewel for hundreds of years to come.

Matching and replacing the existing stone was a big step for the engineers.  Samples were distributed to 20 stone suppliers nationally and Pine’s Stone Company, Inc. in Glenwood Springs, CO was chosen as the stone supplier.  The late Paul Pine and T.J. Sowieja, former Fabrication Director, found stone meeting requirements for color, graining, mineral composition, texture and density.  It was a sandstone from Delaware Quarries in Lumberville, PA that met the stringent requirements.
